An Unusually Rainy September in Tokyo — and Halloween Is Just Around the Corner!

If you are planning a trip to Tokyo this autumn, there are two things we would like you to know: the weather has been rather unusual this year, and Halloween is just around the corner!

A Very Rainy September in Tokyo

September 2026 has been an unusually rainy month in Tokyo.

We have had so many consecutive rainy days that even those of us who live here have been surprised by just how long the wet weather has continued.

Temperatures have also been lower than we normally expect at this time of year. September in Tokyo can still feel quite warm and humid, but this year there have already been days that feel much more like autumn.

If you are visiting Japan soon, we recommend checking the weather forecast before you pack.

A light jacket or something you can easily layer may come in handy, especially in the mornings and evenings. And of course, an umbrella is always useful in Japan!

The good news is that autumn is one of the most comfortable seasons for exploring Tokyo. Once the weather settles down, cooler temperatures make walking around the city much more enjoyable.

Halloween Is Coming to Japan!

At the end of October, Halloween events will take place in many parts of Japan.

Halloween has become increasingly popular here over the years, but Japanese Halloween culture can be a little different from what you may be familiar with in other countries.

For many people in Japan, Halloween is less about traditional trick-or-treating and more about costumes and cosplay.

Walk through entertainment districts or visit Halloween events around late October and you may see people dressed as witches, ghosts and monsters — but you are just as likely to see elaborate costumes inspired by anime, manga, video games and other popular characters.

Some people put an incredible amount of effort into their costumes, so simply seeing all the different cosplay can be part of the fun!

Have Fun — But Please Be Respectful

Of course, Halloween celebrations sometimes get a little too exciting.

In the past, some crowded areas have experienced problems with excessive drinking, loud behavior and people causing trouble in public spaces.

This kind of behavior is not generally welcomed in Japan, and some areas may introduce special rules or restrictions around Halloween.

If you decide to join the celebrations, have fun, take plenty of photos and enjoy the atmosphere — but please remember that the streets are still shared public spaces.

Respect the people around you, follow local rules, and you will be able to enjoy a uniquely Japanese Halloween experience.

Enjoy Autumn in Tokyo!

Rainy weather aside, autumn is a wonderful time to visit Japan.

The temperature becomes more comfortable, seasonal food starts appearing everywhere, and as October approaches, Tokyo gradually takes on a festive Halloween atmosphere.

If you are visiting us this autumn, keep an eye on the weather, bring something warm just in case, and enjoy exploring Japan!

We hope you have a fantastic stay in Tokyo.
